Advantages and Challenges of Flipped Learning
Advantages
Student ownership and control
The flipped classroom model allows for self paced learning. Students have the freedom to watch or listen to lectures as many times as they like. A flipped classroom encourages students to take control and ownership of their own learning.
Accessibility of content
By providing access to lectures and theory, students are able to quickly catch up with missed work. It allows for parents to become more actively involved in their child’s learning as they can also view and access the material at any time.
Time Efficient
One of the key advantages of the flipped classroom model is the time saved for both students and teachers. By pre-watching the theory or core content, class time can be used more productively for practical activities and checking of understanding.
A flexible and engaging way of teaching content
The flipped model allows for a more versatile way of sharing core content. Your videos could be podcasts, videos, PowerPoint presentations, visuals, music or a combination of all of these. The possibilities are endless.
Challenges
Access to technology
Although we take internet access as a given, some students may have limited access to the internet which will affect their ability to access the material. As the flipped model relies on student participation, the assumption is made that students will arrive to the lesson having watched the content.
An increasing use of technology
There are some concerns that the flipped classroom model increases time spent in front of the computer screen and students are already overloaded with technology. This model places a greater emphasis on using technology to teach the core content.
An increase in preparation time
Certainly in the initial stages, the preparation time for developing the resources is significant. Preparing and condensing content into a concise 10 minute presentation is no easy feat; however, once the resource has been created it can be used time and time again.
Confidence and trust required of the teacher
The flipped classroom model relies on an open and honest approach to teaching. Teachers may feel a little exposed as they are no longer teaching within the confines of the classroom. Whilst many teachers will find the flipped classroom model liberating, many others may find it somewhat threatening.
