Flipped Learning in Practice
STEP 1: Plan Decide which lessons you are going to flip. Consider your learning objectives and learning outcomes. What topics or key concepts do your students struggle to understand? Can these concepts be taught in a 5-10 minute video? Some possible flipped lessons include: Content based lessons Revision lessons Summary of key concepts or ideas Tutorials STEP 2 & 3: Technology and Record What technology will you use to capture your content? Do you want to include an interactive whiteboard, visuals, PowerPoint, podcast or video? Some easy ways of recording content include using software such as Screenflow or Screencast-O-Matic. You could also simply set up a video camera and record yourself teaching. Some basic recording tools may include: Office Mix for PowerPoint 2013 Screencast-O-Matic SMART Recorder Screenflow See our General Tools section for more information on tools. STEP 4: Share Make your video easily accessible to your students. You can share your video on YouTube or you may decide to set up a virtual classroom such as Google Classrooms. It may be worthwhile checking your school's internet and sharing policy if you are planning on encouraging student participation and feedback. STEP 5: Evaluate and reflect Evaluating your lessons and reflecting is an important part of the process. Be patient, it may take your students time to adjust to the flipped model. Revise and adapt your videos to the needs of your students. For more information, watch the clip below by Tom Driscoll outlining 5 key steps to flipping your classroom.
